What to Expect

Before the procedure

To start off your cochlear implants journey, you will need to go for several consultations and check-ups to determine if you are a candidate for cochlear implants. Our doctors will guide you through evaluations that may include:

  • Online consultation to briefly discuss why you are interested in getting cochlear implants, discuss and answer any questions.
  • A series of aided and non-aided hearing tests and results review.
  • X-ray scan to assess the condition of your inner ear structure and the current damage.
  • A consultation with our ENT specialists and surgeons.

As for the costs, if you are a Singaporean citizen, you are eligible for a reasonable subsidy to cover the costs of the implants and the procedure. Feel free to contact us and we can refer you to an implant centre who can provide the necessary means of testing.

During the procedure

The surgical procedure is considered a minimally invasive surgery and should last about 2-3 hours. Our surgeon will make a tiny incision behind your ear to insert and secure the internal component so that it rests under your skin.

After the procedure

After resting for 2 weeks, during the “switch-on” procedure (or also known as the activation of your cochlear implants), the speech processor will be calibrated by our trained audiologist and worn by you for the first time. At this point, you will be able to hear using the cochlear implants. It might seem unfamiliar and uncomfortable at the start, but you will get more familiar with it during your aural rehabilitation sessions with our professional hearing specialists.

Cochlear implants users will see an improvement in their quality of life, including better listening, enjoying life more, and smoother communications with the people around them, as compared to when they were only using normal hearing aids. Most individuals will note a significant growth in their awareness and sensitivity of sounds within days after their cochlear implants is turned on, which is about 2 weeks after the surgery.

With more than 4 decades of global and regional experience in the assessment of hearing, consultations, and treatments, we aim to be a safe space for both new and active users of cochlear implants. If you are looking to get cochlear implants treatment and want to find out more about it, schedule an appointment with us today.
